Cone, Inc released a survey stating:
“According to the survey, 93 percent of Americans believe a company should have a presence in social media”
The margin of error associated with a sample of this size is ± 3% they note, and the poll was of adults over age 18.
Well, that is lovely. One problem is the Nielson survey of Internet “penetration” shows the USA at about 75% Internet penetration… perhaps library workstations are where the other quarter gallop off to for their Web fix. Or perhaps “gallop” is a bit too quick, given 12% of Americans are over the age of 65.
The mules wonder if they’ve become out of touch. Still, their uncle Slipshod, out to pasture for some time now, barely knows what the Internet is, and, if one were to mention “social media” – loudly – he’d respond with “bingo” if he could wrap his mind around what this newfangled phrase meant in the first place.
Uncle Slipshod does not have a MuleBook or MuleSpace account. Say “tweet” and he thinks of his friends the robins, which cavort about in his lush pasture in the spring and summer months.
Granted, “social media” is undefined in the survey (though perhaps that’s a problem as well), but it certainly seems that it implies the usual suspects in the Web 2.0 world, and there’s not a disclaimer aside from the under-18 exemption.
When the mules hear 93% of a group as broad as “Americans over 18″ agree to anything, not much comes to mind.
That mules are superior to horses, perhaps?
